The Red 07 License Plate for Classic Cars

A red 07 license plate is, for many classic car owners, an alternative to the usual “H” (historic) plate. It is particularly interesting for collectors who own multiple classic cars and do not use them in everyday life but only bring them out for special occasions.
The big advantage over the H plate: Several classic cars can be registered under one single 07 plate. This saves time, money, and paperwork.
Like the H plate, the red 07 plate is exclusively intended for vehicles of historical significance. The vehicle should be at least 30 years old or have a special collector’s value. The registration is aimed at private collectors, classic car clubs, and also workshops with historic vehicles.
When it comes to usage, there are restrictions: A classic car with a red 07 plate may not be used for everyday trips or commuting. Red plates are intended only for the following purposes:
  • Classic car events, such as rallies or exhibitions
  • Test drives and inspection drives
  • Transfer journeys
  • Workshop visits for repairs or maintenance

Advantages and Disadvantages of the 07 Plate

Advantages
  • Flexibility: Particularly for collectors with multiple classic cars, the 07 plate offers the great advantage of being used across several vehicles.
  • Lower taxes: Vehicle tax is often lower than for cars with an H plate or without historic status.
  • No regular roadworthiness tests: No recurring MOT (HU) is required; roadworthiness is confirmed as part of the classic car appraisal.

In short, the 07 plate offers flexibility and minimal bureaucracy. Once obtained, it is very easy to use.
Disadvantages
  • Restricted use: The vehicle can only be used for certain purposes; everyday driving is not permitted.
  • Logbook requirement: A logbook must be kept to document all trips.
  • Limited recognition abroad: Use of a 07 plate is not always accepted abroad and may cause issues with authorities. Regular renewal: The plate must be renewed periodically.

Whether a red 07 plate is suitable should always be considered on a case-by-case basis. It can make sense, especially if the vehicle is only used occasionally and the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
